Night Terrors

Drabble | Horror | 100 words

Andrea shrinks from the violence playing out in shadows across her bedroom wall. A cloying stink claws past her doorframe as the monster rages.

Mom needs help.

Tiny fists clenched, heart pounding, Andrea swallows fear and slides from her bed, pressing forward toward the din—but she finds her legs rooted and mutinous. She falls to the floor instead, pulling herself across rough carpet. Her body drags like stone.

Too slow.

Her mother’s silhouette falls limp.

Andrea screams. She pinches herself, tries to force herself awake.

The monster she calls Father fills her doorway, a triumphant grin splitting his face.
